Interwiew Sean

Interwiew Sean
Voici une interwiew de Sean, faite par Jacob Hoggard, le chanteur de Hedley, trouvée sur le forum officiel et qui daterait probablement de juillet.

*****

As you read this, the pop-punkers in Hedley are making their first big pillaging mission into the United States. They've got a good starting point, too- a national tour opening for genre heavyweights Yellowcard.
In honour of this momentous occasion, we got hedley singer Jacob Hoggard to track down Yellowcard violinist Sean Mackin and interrogate him in advance of the two bands meeting up. Here's what happened:

Jacob Hoggard: So what have you guys been doing as far as getting ready for the tour and stuff?
Sean Mackin: Actually, we've just been relaxing. Ryan [Key, vocals] just had throat surgery, so nothing too strenuous. We're going to get in the studio next week and do some songs acoustic. We'll be taking some video footage of that so maybe we could release that. Other than that we've been rehearsing and getting ready for the tour.

How's everything going with Ryan? How's his voice coming out?
He's alright. He's had a couple of vocal lessons trying to ease back into it. I know that he's been really worried about everything, but he's doing well and it'll take a couple of tries to come back. Basically, his comfort is most important. I don't really know what he's going through.

It's really hard being the singer because everyone else can go out and drink their f***ing faces off and scream and then just play guitar tomorrow, you know what I mean? Whereas the singer has to constantly be taking care of himself because his body is his instrument.
Yeah, it's frustrating. I sing a little bit.

You sing on the album, right? On the new one?
Yeah, only the back-up stuff, though. I'm nowhere near or around Ryan or Pete [Mosely, bassist]. They are true tenors. They hit those big notes that aren't anywhere at the top of my threshold. So I've been making sure that I don't go out as much so I can sing the next day.

You guys are presenting at the MuchMusic Awards, right?
I think so, I don't know. It's still kind of in the air. I don't really know much information about our schedule.

Yeah, I'm with you.
I'm actually kidding. I actually just don't know what's going on at that time. I've heard something about us going to Toronto and presenting an award, but I'm not sure if it's that.

Yeah, I know about that, when stuff doesn't happen and you just start trying to climb ahead of it. But it's always changing otherwise, so I figure why even bother? Well, if you guys do come then that will be the first time that we meet. We're playing and then we're drinking, well you know, the whole time. How many award shows have you guys done?
We played the VMAs in 2005 and the MTV Video Awards in 2005. So I guess this will be our third, although our first presenting debut, non-musical.

Yeah, you're at the point everybody knows you can play and your status is all that is required.
[laughs] I guess that's awesome.

Have you guys ever been to any stupid or ridiculous award show after-parties?
Um, we tend to steer away from that stuff. We played the VMAs and there was, like, 20 of us and we went to Usher's and P. Diddy's party, but got stopped at the door and they were like, "Whoa, there are too many of you."

That's what happened to us in Vegas when we played the Porno Awards and they wouldn't let us into the party because we didn't have enough girls with us. We were like, "What are you talking about?"
Yeah, they were like, "There are too many people inside. It's a fire hazard." There's like, 20 of us, what did you think, that we were going to roll up with the five guys in the band? Meanwhile, we've got our girlfriends, and our manager's here and we've got our security guys. What did you think? That just the singer would show up and not the rest of us?

His presense is requested.
Sometimes I would rather stay at home than party and whatnot. It's just weird when people are, like, "Can I get my friend's girlfriend in?" or some of this stuff. It's weird. I try to avoid the status parties.

Yeah, I gotcha. So how is your guys' record doing right now?
I don't know. Kids keep coming out to shows, so that's usually a good sign that you don't suck. It went gold a little bit before Ryan had surgery. We haven't been out on the road and we've been canceling shows, which is a horrible thing for us. In 2003 and 2004, we never cancelled any shows. So it's been tough with all the sickness and stuff. It's been rough. We're going to get our act together.

I sprained my ankle really bad, like, three weeks ago, and we've been lucky that we were just doing, like, a promo tour because even just trying to get on stage and play a show, it's so tough. Even the smallest injurgy impedes you a lot. You're really stuck to do anything.
Well, recover buddy.

Yeah, thanks. I was reading that you guys really made a departure with this record. Well not really a departure, you just really matured a lot in your sound. What do you think is one of the biggest things that have changed?
Basically it's a lot of natural evolution and progression of our band and us as people and musicians. I think that's an important part of being a musician. It's a lot of pressure when you put out a new record. We don't want to stagnate as musicians. I've been playing violin since I was six years old and our skill and talent is always changing.

Did you guys write while you were recording?
We wrote a little bit of stuff while recording. You know, we had some riffs here and there that we had backlogged. A lot of it came from the first band vacation ever in 2005, after touring Ocean Avenue. We tried, like, 16 songs.

You didn't release all of them, though?
No. We have a couple of b-sides. We're saving one for the next record and that's pretty much all of them.

You had a bonus one on iTunes didn't you?
There's a couple of bonus ones. "Three Flights Down," there is another one, "When We're Old Men," and there's one that Pete had written that Ryan didn't write lyrics for.

Well, I love the instrumentals you did on "Three Flights Up."
Thank you very much.

My favourite is "Two Weeks From Twenty." I thought that was pretty f***in' cool. It's probably the most different one on the record, but it was a cool track.
We don't want it to be like a novelty thing, but our band, we like to always throw something different in there to make them think. It was something totally different that gives us and edge off the sounds we are getting.

I like that one because it's totally different from anything else on the CD.
A lot of us like to listen to jazz and Pete is a big fan of Ben Folds and some piano stuff. I think actually Pete wanted it to be like a ukulele song to start. I guess being a band and going through all of the craziness we've been through. with athe war in Iraq, we wanted to write a song from the views of all the people who have come to us and are like, "We don't know what's going on, we don't know whether our friends are alive, you guys have been an inspiration to us." We wanted it less to be, "This is our song about the war in Iraq" and more of a timeless look at war times in general.

Do you write violin?
Yeah, of course.

Oh, cool!
Sometimes I'll want to play some of the guitar riffs because I still listen to that stuff. I write lead guitar stuff that might not sound so good on the violin, but then they will put it on guitar.

That's awesome. I grew up playing piano since I was six or seven, so I'm always writing songs on the piano. One day it will be cool to bring it along.
We used to tour with a piano. Nobody knows this, but Pete actually taught himself how to play piano. He's pretty amazing. I don't want to say that he's a self-taught prodigy, but he's pretty good.

That's cool. It's always handy to have a musical prodigy in the band.
We've got two- Pete and LP, so we're good.

Where do you guys see your style and your approach going in the next little while?
I don't know, I guess we just get a couple of good ideas. Our intergrity is very important to us and the music comes first and we definitely won't compromise that. We'll try to write exactly what we are thinking or feeling or what we think is good. We are very lucky to be playing music on a daily basis.

That's for sure. I noticed that you guys have, like, a couple of thousand MySpace fans. How improtant is it for you guys to stay in touch with your fans? Because I know for us it's important to make sure that our fans feel important because those are the people who are supporting you.
Actually, I'm not really in that. I mean MySpace is a freaking huge beast right now, but I'm not really connected to that. I do more work on our own website than on our MySpace page. Our fans are always pumping us and requesting us. Our fans have definitely lifted us up to what we are and we try to hang out with them as much as possible.

Do you guys try to sigh autographs and stuff like that?
Sure, if someone asks us to they can have our autograph. But I'm not going around like, "Hey, do you want an autograph?" I'm not putting up a sign at our merch stand: "Sean Here"

That's awesome. It's really important to fans to let them know that you're just normal people like them and it's important to communicate it.
I think our fans know that we wouldn't be here if it wasn't for them. I hope it is as clear as we try to make it.

So, in that time, what was the must f***ed-up prank that you guys have ever pulled?
Pranks? We're not much of a prank band. We're more of a bor-down band. But LP and I one time as a prank put our mics in the monitors. When the band was playing, LP and I were doing hardcore screaming at the band, but the front of the house didn't know. That was pretty hilarious. We steer away from all of the craziness and whatnot that usually happen in bands.

OK, one last question: What one band would you guys love to tour with if you could?
I'd say Foo Fighters.

Really?
You don't get much better thatn Dave Grohl. He's pretty amazing.

Oh my god, I love Dave Grohl.
Just the things he's dont. Playing drums with who he did and writing with the Foo Fighters. I've only seen him twice, but both times everyone was eating out of the palm of his hand.

He's a funny guy. I saw him on the Late Show and he played "Stairway to Heaven" acoustically. When he got to the solo, he did it vocally like [Jacob starts to sing the guitar solo]. That was pretty funny.
Yeah.

OK man, I guess that's all I've got.

OK, thanks.
